About Cyprus

Dear friends, welcome to Cyprus! An island famous as the birthplace of Aphrodite Goddess of Love and Beauty!

Cyprus has a fascinating 10,000 years long history that has seen many civilizations occupy the island starting from the Alexander the Great to the Turkish Invasion being still present on the island since 1974.

Cyprus lies in the eastern Mediterranean and is the third largest island in the region after Sicily and Sardinia. Its nearest neighbors are Turkey (65km to the North), Syria to the East and Egypt in the South.

Contrary to what many people believe, Cyprus is not part of Greece although two countries are very closely linked historically, culturally and economically. Greek is the main language spoken in the South while English is spoken by 90% of the population.

The island occupies an area of 9,250 sq. km. It is 225 km long and 94 km wide. Despite its tiny size, there is a variety of places that one can visit here starting from sandy beaches in Ayia Napa, Paphos and Limassol to Troodos mountains where there is a high possibility of snow attracting many locals and tourists for skiing and snowboarding in January and February.

Of course, Cyprus is best known for its sunshine attracting thousands of tourists especially during the summer months. The average temperature on the island is 19 C, reaching 32 C in the summer.

The island’s estimated population is 730,000 of which 87,5% belongs to the Greek Cypriot community and 12,5% to the Turkish Cypriot community.

Apart from the capital, Nicosia, with an estimated population of 189,000, all major cities are located on the coast. Limassol is the second largest city and the island's biggest port. Larnaca and Paphos, which are popular holiday resorts, are the third and fourth largest cities, respectively.

Food for Cypriots means a feast. Amongst the favorite dishes are the following Fish/Meat Meze, Kleftiko and Souvla (kebab). When you visit Cyprus, don’t forget to try some of its wine, olive oil, halloumi and feta cheese as these are the traditional Cypriot delights.
